Driver Safety, Pet Ownership and other crime specific classes
The mission of the Educational Services Division is to provide is to provide high-quality educational classes by creating a supportive environment that heightens the awareness of students’ attitudes, emotions and behavior through adult-center learning.
The classes are centered on the adult learner. The facilitator builds on the learner’s experiences, problems and ideas to change behaviors/attitudes that resulted in the violation. Instruction is presented to help the learner focus on the objectives listed below:
Inclement Weather Line (Metro classes only)
Metropolitan Court DWI, Driver Improvement and Aggressive Driving Schools only.

Educational Programs/Community Service
Court Policy: Defendants are permitted ONLY one reschedule for schools and community service. Call 841-8151 for scheduling or if you have questions.
Schools: Only defendants complying with the order of a judge can be registered to attend one of the schools listed below.
Metropolitan Court Driver Improvement School
Course is for defendants guilty of a moving traffic violation.
- A certified 6-hour course
- Classes held on Monday through Thursday; also on Saturday
- School Fee is $25.00; Rescheduling Fee is $20.00
- Classes available in Spanish
- A defendant referred from another court does not need a referral form to register for the DI School. Defendants requesting a DI School at the Customer Service Division, by phone or at the counter, may select another DI School in the Albuquerque area licensed in New Mexico through the Traffic Safety Bureau.
- Course offered by Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court at the Educational Services Center located at the Metro Park Building
Metropolitan Court Aggressive Driving School
Course is for defendants guilty of repeated moving traffic violations that include reckless driving, excessive speed, aggressive driving, etc.
- 7 hour course
- 3.5 hours each on Wednesday and Thursday evenings
- School fee is $90 Rescheduling fee is $20
- Spanish classes available
- Course offered by Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court at the Educational Services Center located at the Metro Park Building.
Metropolitan Court Driving While Impaired (DWI) School
Course for defendants convicted as a DWI lst Offender.
- A certified 12-hour course
- Classes held on Monday through Thursday; also on Saturday
- School Fee is $100.00. Rescheduling Fee is $25.00
- Classes available in Spanish
- Formal documents from court/agency referring defendant required for class registration
- Course offered by Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court at the Educational Services Center located at the Metro Park Building.
Victims’ Impact Panel (Mothers Against Drunk Driving M.A.D.D.)
Course is for DWI lst and DWI Drug Court defendants
- A one hour panel
- Panel held on Thursdays (once a month) and Saturday (several times a year)
- School Fee is $50.00; Rescheduling fee is $85.00
- Panel available in Spanish

A.S.P.E.N
Course is for defendants guilty of a misdemeanor, including shoplifting, vandalism, gang involvement, prostitution, etc.
- A 6 ½ hour course
- Class offered on Friday
- School Fee is $100.00; Rescheduling Fee is $25.00
- Curriculum materials are available for Spanish speakers
- Course offered by Alternative Sentencing Programs & Educational Networks
Pet Owners’ Responsibility School
Course is for defendants guilty of violation of animal ordinance laws.
- A 3 ½ hour course
- Class held on Saturday
- School Fee is $50.00; Rescheduling Fee is $50.00
- Instructor is bilingual in English/Spanish
- Course offered by the City of Albuquerque Animal Services Division
New Mexico Motorcycle Safety School
Course is for defendants guilty of motorcycle moving traffic violations.
- A certified 20 hour course
- Classes held Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- School Fee is $180.00 (Defendants age 18 and over)
- School Fee is $80.00 (Defendants under age 18)
- Course offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Hunter Education School
Course is for defendants guilty of a firearms violation.
- A certified 16 hour course
- Classes held Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- School Fee: donation of $5.00
- Course offered by the State Department of Game & Fish
Community Service
Defendants of Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court who are ordered to perform community service hours will select from a court approved list of Non-Profit Community Services agencies.
Defendants may pay and or work community service for Court fines and fees. However, mandatory community service hours must be worked at one of the court approved agencies.
