What is a surety bond? If I pay the bonding company, do I get my money back?

A surety bond is an amount of money posted with the Court that guarantees that defendants will appear for their court dates. If a defendant fails to appear, the bond is forfeited to the Court. Bonding companies put up the money and guarantee that defendants will show up as required. They generally charge a certain percentage of the required bond, and this is their fee. It is not refundable. Because they are private businesses, each operates with different rules. Look under "Bonding Companies" in the phone book to find one.
