Court Closure Notice:

The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court will be closed from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 24th for the court's annual Employee Conference. Misdemeanor Custody Arraignments will commence at 8:30 a.m. and will be immediately followed by Felony First Appearances. Traffic Arraignments and Preliminary Hearings will not be held that day. The outside Bonding Window will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the filing of emergency motions and for posting bonds.

Initiative to Reduce Failure-to-Appear Rate Showing Positive Results

The failure-to-appear rate for those who opted in to Metro Court’s courtesy Text Reminder Service has been cut by more than half since the court began the initiative a little more than a year ago. From the implementation of the service on April 18, 2017 to April 18, 2018, of the 8,681 hearings in which the text reminders were sent, only 493 of those hearings resulted in a failure-to-appear, producing a 5.7 percent failure-to-appear rate. Judge Sharon D. Walton honored with prestigious Henrietta Pettijohn Award

Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Judge Sharon D. Walton was recognized by the New Mexico Women’s Bar Association with the prestigious Henrietta Pettijohn Award at a reception on Thursday, May 10th for her lifetime work of supporting women in the legal field. Ms. Pettijohn was the first woman to be admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court in the Territory of New Mexico. Learn More

Metro Court’s DWI Recovery Court seeing less repeat offenders

New numbers show a local program aimed at fighting back against repeat DWI offenders is seeing a lot of success. Formerly known as Drug Court, the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court “DWI Recovery Court Program” is changing the lives of many. Metro Court Hosts Regional Mock Trial Competition

Hundreds of high school students from across the state descended upon the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse in mid-February for one of the state’s most highly-regarded mock trial competitions – the Gene Franchini High School Mock Trial Qualifiers. Twenty-seven teams of aspiring attorneys competed for a chance to move on to the State Finals in March. The eight teams moving on are: Volcano Vista Platinum & Black, Albuquerque Academy Black and Red, Atrisco Heritage Academy Blue, Pojoaque Black, and Albuquerque High Green and White. One of these teams will then go on to represent New Mexico at the National Competition in Reno, Nevada in May.Learn More

Metro Court becomes ‘Wedding Central’

After Marc Machon proposed at Christmas dinner, he and his fiancée, Maureen, started planning a big, early-summer wedding. “It just got complicated,” Maureen said, sitting in the hallways of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse on Wednesday, hearts and flowers taped to the walls behind her. Domestic Violence court offers alternatives, hope for future

Jaime was just 19 years old when a fight with his girlfriend escalated from what he describes as “a lot of back and forth petty stuff” to a conflict that saw him facing misdemeanor domestic violence charges.
