The current Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse opened in January of 2004.

It is a 244,000-square-foot structure with nine floors.

The Fourth and Lomas location is the fourth courthouse for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. It has been previously located at Second and Tijeras NW, in the city’s Police Department Headquarters building at Fourth and Marquette NW and at Fourth and Roma prior to the construction of the present facility. It is part of Albuquerque’s downtown Courthouse District.

The current building was designed in a contemporary Art Deco style and has won a number of design awards. The layout of the structure was the result of extensive research done at other courthouses around the country to determine the optimal approach, given the needs of this metropolitan area and the functions of the court.

The cost of the courthouse is covered by monies collected statewide for court uses. Each defendant paying fines to New Mexico courts pays a $24 facility fee to cover the costs of courthouse construction all over the state.

The courthouse is designed around a three-story rotunda. Interior materials consist of red and grey granite, black and green marble and white travertine. The oak used in the courthouse has a red cherry finish.

The building is aligned to the east to take advantage of natural light which conserves energy.
